We’re incredibly proud to share some fantastic news for everyone connected with Mountain Ash Golf Club, our General Manager, Gareth Evans, has been named Welsh Golf Club Manager of the Year at the prestigious Wales Golf Awards . The annual awards celebrate the people and organisations who make golf such a special game across Wales. From dedicated volunteers and rising stars to clubs and lifelong contributors, the evening shines a light on those who go above and beyond to grow and inspire the sport. Held at the renowned Twenty Ten Clubhouse at Celtic Manor Resort , the event brought together the very best of Welsh golf, which makes this recognition all the more special.

Gareth told us:

“I’m incredibly proud to receive this award. To be recognised amongst so many clubs across Wales is a real honour. It’s been a challenging but rewarding first year, and I’m grateful to everyone at Mountain Ash Golf Club f or their support, we’re moving in the right direction and there’s plenty more to come.”

A Year of Progress

Looking back over the past year, it’s fair to say it’s been a journey. There have been challenges, plenty of hard work, and a lot of learning along the way, but also real progress, both on and off the course, with Gareth at the heart of it all. What’s been clear throughout is a shared determination to move the club forward and create something we can all be proud of. And that’s exactly what’s happening. Mountain Ash Golf Club is firmly on the up.

A Club We Can All Enjoy

We’ve always been a club that punches above its weight, and that won’t change. We have to make budgets stretch and often make difficult decisions to keep the club moving forward. It’s fair to say that Gareth and the team have been instrumental in helping the club turn a corner. Instead of constantly focusing on short-term survival, we’re now in a position where we can plan for a stronger, long-term future. What matters most is what we’re building here: a welcoming, improving club that members, visitors, and the local community can genuinely enjoy. There’s a real sense of momentum around the place again, and this award is another sign that things are moving in the right direction.

A Shared Achievement

While this award recognises Gareth, it’s also a reflection of everyone involved with the club. From members and volunteers to staff, sponsors, and supporters, it’s a collective effort that makes progress possible. The backing, encouragement, and belief shown over the past year have played a huge part in this achievement.

Looking Ahead

With the golf season now upon us, the focus quickly turns to what’s next. There’s still plenty to do, more improvements to make, and more progress to come but we’ll continue to push forward together. This is just another step on the journey and if the past year is anything to go by, there’s plenty more to look forward to at Mountain Ash Golf Club.

Investing in the Course - Past Present & Future

It wasn't quite like finding oil, but it's extremely valuable to us

You wouldn’t think it after the last few months of rain, but for many years water has actually been one of the biggest challenges facing our course. Historically, we’ve often struggled to get enough water where it’s needed most, particularly during the summer months, and especially around the greens. Like many clubs, we’ve had to deal with ageing infrastructure, pressure issues, and systems that simply weren’t designed for the demands of the modern game.

As part of our continued efforts to improve the course for everyone who plays here, the club invested last year in a number of key upgrades. These included new sprinklers, improved valves, and better control over how water is delivered closer to the greens. While these improvements may not always be immediately visible, they play a vital role in maintaining consistent playing surfaces, protecting turf during dry spells, and ensuring the course remains enjoyable throughout the season.

Recently, while looking back through the club’s history, we came across a fantastic old photograph from 1977 showing the original watering system being officially turned on by our President at the time, Lord Aberdare . The valve featured in the photo was designed to reduce water pressure to the lower holes on the course, an area that has caused issues over the years and remains critical to managing effective irrigation.

Back then, this was a major milestone for the club. There was no Sky Sports in the clubhouse, no internet, and improvements like this were genuinely big events. Committee members, club members, and invited guests all turned out to mark what was, at the time, a significant feat of engineering and a real investment in the future of the course.

Thanks to the knowledge and support of long-standing member, former Chair of Greens, and Club Captain John Lloyd , one of only three people still alive who appear in that original photograph, we were recently able to relocate the valve and carefully dig it out. Remarkably, it’s still there and will once again play an important role in helping our greens team manage water more effectively.

This small piece of club history is a great reminder that improving the course has always been a priority at Mountain Ash Golf Club . From past generations to the present day, each investment builds on the last, helping us protect the course, enhance playing conditions, and ensure it continues to be enjoyed by members and visitors alike for many years to come.

Celebrating a Fantastic Season at Mountain Ash Golf Club

Presentation Evening 2025

After a long and busy season out on the course, it was brilliant to see so many of us come together for our annual Presentation Evening . This night is always one of the highlights of the MAGC calendar, a chance to celebrate the golfers who’ve put in the hours, supported the club, and delivered some incredible performances throughout the year.

This season has seen some outstanding golf across every section of the club. From nail-biting finishes and first-time winners to more seasoned players showing exactly why experience counts, the competitions have been as exciting as they’ve been memorable. Every trophy handed out represents commitment, consistency and, above all, a shared love of the game.

Presentation Night isn’t just about medals and silverware though, it’s about recognising the spirit of Mountain Ash Golf Club . Our competitions are the lifeblood of our club, the traditions that connect long-standing members with new faces, and the heartbeat that keeps our community thriving. Seeing the room full of smiles, stories and well-earned celebrations reminded us why MAGC is such a special place to belong.

As we look ahead to the next 12 months, we’re genuinely excited about what’s to come. Work is already underway to continue improving the course, refining how our competitions run, and making sure every golfer, whether you’re chasing scratch or happy just to get up the hill on hole 5, gets the best possible experience.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended, everyone who competed this year, and everyone who continues to support the club in so many ways. Here’s to another brilliant season, more improvements, more memories, and, of course, more great golf at Mountain Ash Golf Club.

Mountain Ash Golf Club Pays Its Respects on Remembrance Sunday

Laying Our Wreath

On Remembrance Sunday, Mountain Ash Golf Club was proud to be represented at the Mountain Ash War Memorial, where our club wreath was laid as part of the annual service of remembrance.

This year, the wreath was laid on behalf of the club by Tom Williams, who stepped forward with dignity on a day that means so much to so many within our community. The service was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who served and continue to serve in our armed forces. Their courage, their commitment, and their legacy are things we must never take for granted.

As a club rooted in the heart of the town, it is important for us to stand alongside the wider Mountain Ash community to honour those who gave their today for our tomorrow. Seeing so many gather at the memorial, from families and veterans to local organisations and young people, was a powerful reflection of our shared respect and remembrance.

We are grateful to Tom for representing MAGC with pride, and grateful to everyone who paused, reflected, and remembered.

Getting Ready for Winter

As Winter Gets Closer the Greens Team & Volunteers Are Getting it Done

After a record breaking hot summer we finally had some much needed rain to green up the course. Plenty of golf weather has meant plenty of visitors and lots of golf for our members.

We have put down one application of fertiliser to promote root growth for the autumn and winter period, another one will be going down after the greens renovations, one application of wetting agent with a seaweed mix has also been applied, which will allow the greens to absorb more of the rain that we've been needing for the last few weeks.

Now, after a wet but successful finals day over this weekend the green staff and our amazing volunteers have gone full speed into the preparations for winter. This week we have seen the vast majority of greens cored and top dressed as part of the greens plan for the next 18 months. Hard to believe it's been a number of years since we've been able to achieve anything like this, but it will now be a regular part of the overall course planning that we do each year.

A huge well done to the greens team on getting this work underway in some challenging conditions and also a massive thank you to Richard Ponsford from Aitkens, Jordan Cockayne, Ashton Flower, Phil Norris, Dai Smith, Richard Heath, Craig Boulton and all our fantastic volunteers. Without your help this work would be impossible and the course could not manage without you.

Of course with this work comes disruption, so we ask members to keep this in mind when booking tee times and contacting the club. This is vital work that must be completed for us to remain on track with course improvements over the coming months and years.

The Role: Head Greenkeeper

As Head Greenkeeper , you will play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing our course and club grounds. You will report to the General Manager and Greens Committee , ensuring the course remains in peak condition year-round. Your expertise will directly contribute to improving playability, aesthetics, and sustainability, aligning with our long-term vision for excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee the daily maintenance and long-term development of the golf course.
Implement best practices in turf management, irrigation, and environmental sustainability.
Lead and work alongside a team, including volunteers, to achieve high standards.
Collaborate with the Greens Committee and Club Manager to plan course improvements.
Ensure machinery and equipment are maintained and used efficiently.

What We’re Looking For:

Previous experience as a Head Greenkeeper or a senior role in course maintenance.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage a team.
Knowledge of agronomy, irrigation systems, and golf course machinery.
Passion for golf course presentation and continuous improvement.
A proactive and adaptable approach to course management.

Festive Cheer Triumphs Over the Weather at Mountain Ash Golf Club

Yesterday, despite challenging weather conditions that saw many courses around us forced to close, we proudly hosted an incredibly successful Christmas Jumper Day at Mountain Ash Golf Club. This achievement was far from accidental and a testament to the hard work, dedication, and spirit of our exceptional team.

From the early hours, before the sun even rose, our green staff, committee members, and volunteers were out in force, braving the elements to ensure the course was in perfect condition and ready for play. Their commitment and teamwork truly exemplify what makes our club so special. To everyone who sacrificed a warm lie-in to make the day such a triumph—thank you. Your efforts didn’t go unnoticed and are greatly appreciated by all who enjoyed the day.

Christmas Jumper Day has always been a cherished event at Mountain Ash Golf Club, and this year was no different. From festive knitwear to friendly competition, the day was filled with laughter, camaraderie, and holiday spirit celebration as we approach the end of the year.

Glamorgan County Presidents Cup

Congratulations to Rhys Carhart on his impressive victory in the Glamorgan County President’s Cup today at Cardiff Golf Club! Rhys secured his place in the final after a hard-fought 1up win against Tom Peet of Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club in the morning’s semifinal.

The final turned into an all-Mountain Ash showdown as Rhys faced off against fellow club member Ian Flower, who had already earned his spot. It was Rhys’s day to shine, as he triumphed with a 2&1 victory over Ian.

A huge well done to both players for representing Mountain Ash Golf Club with pride once again! In the first photo, Rhys is pictured alongside Glamorgan County Golf UnionPresident, Ednyfed Morgan, after claiming his well-deserved title.

Ladies Championship Final

This year, we were thrilled to welcome back the Ladies Championship final to Finals Day after a brief hiatus. The final match saw Sarah Morgan take on defending champion Lowri Davies. It was a demanding week for Sarah, as she played both her quarterfinal and semi-final matches in the lead-up to the final, where Lowri was eagerly awaiting her challenger.

The 36-hole final was a tightly contested battle, with outstanding golf from both players.After the first 18 holes, the match was all square, leaving everything to play for in the second round. Ultimately, it was Sarah who emerged victorious, winning 2up and securing her 7th Club Championship title at Mountain Ash.

This latest win adds to Sarah’s remarkable golfing record, which now includes 7 ClubChampionship victories at Mountain Ash, 2 Championship wins at the Vale Resort, and 1 Championship title at Radyr Golf Club. It also continues the proud Morgan family legacy, with her great-grandfather Monty Morgan having won 7 club championships, her grandfather J.R.T. Morgan winning 2, and her father Stuart Morgan famously capturing the title in 1977.

A heartfelt congratulations to Sarah on her incredible achievement! It was an especially proud day for the Morgan family, as the championship trophy was presented to her by her mother, Lady Club Captain Sandra Morgan.

Annual Finals Day

We recently hosted our annual Finals Day, with the Club Championship serving as the highlight of an exciting day of golf. The 36-hole final saw Clayton Gore, making his debut in the championship, take on seasoned competitor Ian Flower, who was competing in his18th final. Ian, a familiar face in the finals, had only previously been defeated by Luke Thomas, Rhys Carhart, and Stuart Manley.

The match proved to be an entertaining contest, with Clayton finishing the first round 2up.Both players elevated their game in the second round, putting on an impressive display for the spectators. In the end, Ian Flower clinched victory with a birdie on the 18th hole, securing a 2up win.

This marks Ian’s 15th Club Championship title atMountain Ash, further cementing his legendary status in the club’s history. His golfing resume is truly remarkable, featuring aClub Championship win at Aberdare in 2007, a Champion of Champions title, multipleGlamorgan Order of Merit and County Championship wins, a Glamorgan CountyPresidents Cup, KO Cup victories, course records at both Mountain Ash and Caradoc, and the distinction of being one of only three players to represent Glamorgan County over 100times in their 96-year history. Ian was also part of a Welsh Team Championship victory and was awarded life membership at Mountain Ash Golf Club in 2022 for his outstanding achievements and dedication to raising the club's profile in Welsh golf.

Congratulations, Ian! The question now is, how many more championships are still left in the tank?
