A Review from Germany
Many members already know what a special place Mountain Ash Golf Club is. We may not compete with some of the larger clubs blessed with huge budgets and lavish facilities, but what we do offer is something far more authentic, atmosphere, character, incredible views, a warm welcome and a golf course full of variety.
That’s why it was especially rewarding this week to receive such fantastic feedback from a visiting golfer who took the time to contact us after his round and share his experience.
We appreciate every review we receive, but this one carried particular significance. Dirk, who visited us from Germany, writes for the respected golf platform Leading Courses and his review perfectly captured what so many of our members value about the club.
Here’s what he had to say about his visit to Mountain Ash Golf Club:
Mountain Ash Golf Club (5,395 yards, par 69 from the yellow tees) is situated above the Cynon Valley in South Wales and offers stunning views of the surrounding valleys even on the drive there. The club is about a 35- to 40-minute drive from Cardiff, with the last few kilometres becoming typically Welsh, a bit narrower and more winding.
After entering the club grounds (look for the sign on the left – I drove past it twice!), the view suddenly opens up to the course and the functional clubhouse. There's plenty of parking, and everything feels pleasantly uncomplicated. From the parking lot, you walk directly into the clubhouse, where I received an exceptionally warm welcome. I immediately felt not just like a guest, but truly welcome. I don't usually do this, but Angela really deserves it, I've never met such a lovely lady with such a deep understanding of the club. Thank you for our chat!
The course itself is quite a surprise. Due to its hillside location, many holes utilize natural elevation changes without feeling unfair. Magnificent views across the valley and the surrounding mountains open up time and again, especially enjoyable in good weather.
At the same time, the course demands focused play, as slopes and sometimes narrow fairways mean you shouldn't just blindly pull out your driver. The fairways were in good condition, and the greens were pleasantly true for putting. I particularly liked the varied design of the holes. Hardly any two holes are alike, keeping you alert throughout the entire round.
What makes Mountain Ash even more appealing is its honest and down-to-earth atmosphere. No unnecessary frills, just a beautiful golf course with friendly people and stunning views.
I'd choose the 18th as my signature hole, a par 5 with all the trimmings, I actually came off the green at par, and it felt amazing.
All in all, a truly beautiful course with lots of character and stunning panoramas that definitely deserves more attention, a hidden gem in my opinion.”
